96MB Low End VPS Review Part VIII – Inception Hosting

If you have been following this blog since its birth, you probably notice that I have recently slowed down a little from the original pace I was targeting (one review per week, which sort of give me the balance of maintaining the interest without devote too much time that would jeopardize my other priorities), as a result, I literally have a mini-queue of VPS that is lining up for me to write reviews on.

Inception Hosting is an interesting company, registered in UK but their servers servers in Netherlands – The low land and the land of freedom that is famous for many of the off-shore hosts, who are “not reputable and have poor infrastructure” according to this WHT post. Could Inception Hosting be an exception or just like their names have suggested, they would just be a dream mixed with reality?

Price and Set Up

Inception Hosting has a wide variety of VPS hosting plans (perhaps one of the most diverse I have seen), from the smallest 96MB plan (yes, same RAM amount that supports this very blog you are reading), which cost about 4.36 USD per month, all the way to the monster 2GB RAM plan that cost almost 54 USD per month. Although not as expensive as the previous two VPS providers I have reviewed for, is not the cheapest Xen provider out there, however their distinct geographical advantage definitely give them an edge on the prices.

The provision of the server is pretty much instant if you could pass the fraud check. However the emails have a pretty good chance to go to Spam box if you are using a GMail account (it went to mine). Hopefully if we keep marking the emails sent from them as Not Spam, the issue will eventually be resolved.

Another way of finding if your VPS is actually provisioned is to go through My Emails in your client area (which is what I did to find out my VPS login details), and watch out for the following three emails:

One very interesting difference that I have noticed is in the welcome emails, the login details to the SolusVM is not given automatically, instead you will need to log into your client area on WHMCS to find the details:

I guess the intention of doing so is to make sure the SolusVM login details do not go to the wrong hands since you could pretty much do everything on the VPS from the control panel. However, the root password for the VPS box was sent in plain text in the same email, which kind of defeat the whole purpose.

Control Panel

Unlike other hosts who use WHMCS strictly for billing and customer purposes and use SolusVM panel to perform any VPS related actions, Inception Hosting actually recommend their users to run everything in the client area and using SolusVM only as a secondary source.

Here is what you see when log into your client area and go to the VPS under My Services, basically the status, IP, disk usage, bandwidth usage and traffic are right in front of you:

There seems to be quite a few options for you to control the VPS in the Virtual Server Control Panel as well, however I have tried to click a few and here is what I got:

I definitely think they still need to do some work on their website, besides getting 404 errors here, the client login button on their home page also does not appear to work although the pop-up looks nice:

Update: Issue has been fixed on the same day this post was published.

Even up to today, the quickest way for me to access their client area (besides memorizing the entire URL), is to click on one of the order buttons and login from the page showed up afterwards.

Furthermore, both the client area and SolusVM login do not have SSL, although not the only one doing that, it is certainly a show stopper for some of their potential clients.

Update: Both WHMCS and SolusVM are now SSL-enabled as of July 12, 2011 and are both using standard https ports. Good work!

The SolusVM control panel is fairly standard with all the standard functionality and as with many other VPS providers, the rDNS requires manual tickets and both Quick Backup and Central Backup are not available:

However, the real surprise comes when you hit Reinstall OS, they have so many OS templates that they become the very first VPS provider that I have reviewed that can’t take a screenshot on, here is the list of all templates they have available (if you are bored, you can click here to skip):

Yes, there are 94 templates altogether, which pretty much covered all major Linux distributions and all the versions of them for the past few years (both 32 and 64 bit versions as well!). Therefore, if you are having a hard time finding the Linux distribution you want to work with on your VPS, there is a pretty good chance that Inception Hosting has one of them.

The rebuild time for a Xen VPS is a little longer than the OpenVZ boxes that I have used before, presumably because a kernel is actually loaded into your VPS rather than just pointing a kernel to the VPS. In my experience with Inception Hosting, the VPS will show as online for about a minute before went offline, then back online for after 2 or 3 minutes, which I think most of the users won’t care too much about.

From what I have tested so far, Ubuntu and Debian worked right out of the box, there is an issue with the ArchLinux template with the IP address, which makes the VPS not accessible from anything but the recovery console and unable to connect to the Internet at all. Anthony from Inception Hosting has offered me a quick 2 line fix for that issue and hopefully the template author would be able to fix them relatively soon as well.

Overall, besides a crippled website/WHMCS template, I think from the aspect of control panel, Inception is right at the average. However, I have to give them the credit of at least tried to use WHMCS to control the VPS, which would make the life of the clients a lot easier (particularly when you get a SolusVM login name that is like vmuser02132rewhjdgshg and often pointing to a non-standard port 5353, which could give a headache to those who are behind really restricted firewalls) and they definitely have an amazing selection of OS templates that would be useful if you are looking for some really hard to find Linux distributions.

Tests on VPS

The test VPS I have received was a Xen VPS Lite package that is priced at 11.99 Euro (17.58 USD) per month (now it is at 8.99 Euro per month, which 13.18 USD) and comes with 256MB of RAM, 15GB of hard drive and 150GB of bandwidth.

Right after the installation of their Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit minimal template, here are the memory and hard drive space:

You have read it right, that is 8 cores of Intel i7 950 CPU powering the VPS, and none of the cores seems have the clock speed locked! This is definitely the first time I have seen a provider put this much CPU power to such a tiny VPS box.

There inode limit seems to be set to pretty low numbers (my BuyVM VPS with the same size of hard drive practically has 3 times as much inode limit as this one), which I guess is to prevent people putting up too many tiny files on the drive:

However, I think such limitation does comes with a great advantage, the hard drive I/O speed, as a result, looks really good:

Another selling point of the VPS from Inception Hosting is their port speed, which is 1Gbit. As a result, the download and upload speed are pretty amazing:

I used aget rather than wget to run the download test, since using single thread to download may not be able to show off the full power of the port, and the results is more than 500Mbps:

Even for the all-familiar single-thread wget, the VPS has also thrown in a really good download speed of close to the aget results:

Obviously, as a server, how fast the uploads are is more important than the downloading speed.

First is the BuyVM VPS from Fremont, CA datacentre, which is not really great but I think it is mostly because of HE’s connection to Europe is not very solid:

It seems that overall, the upload speed across Atlantic Ocean is perhaps a little less than satisfactory, however the speed seems to be really great across Europe.

The last surprise (or not-so-surprise) came to me when I did the UnixBench tests, and I have to say this is the first 256MB VPS box that I have ever seen which scored this high:

Note: I actually ran the UnixBench test before Inception Hosting has enabled all 8 cores for every VPS and as such, the score is only based on 4 cores of CPU available. For those using Ubuntu or Debian and installed the VPS before 8 cores were made available to your Inception Hosting VPS, you will need to reload OS for all 8 cores to kick in.

Overall, I have to say the performance of this eight-core monster, despite the little RAM it has, is rather impressive, good memory usage, good disk I/O and fantastic UnixBench score!

Service and Support

I like VPS providers that do not keep their customers in the dark, which I think Inception Hosting has done a great job in doing so. Whether it is DDOS or hard drive failure, I can always get an email in my inbox as soon as the incident has happened. It is almost inevitable for every single VPS providers to have some operational issues once a while, however the fact that they keep all these known to customers is something I would really recommend other hosts to do.

Inception Hosting is very fast in responding tickets as well, my enquiry about TUN/TAP (it is enabled by default to all Xen VPS, by the way) was answered in less than 5 minutes (logged in 19:49, answered in 19:54), which is definitely comparable, if not better, than some of the most reputable VPS providers.

Finally, although the Quick Backup feature in the SolusVM control panel does not work, they have offered free offsite backup to all their customers to keep data safe. Although almost none of the VPS providers use the Quick Backup feature, they are one of the very few that I have seen offer free backup to their customers.

Conclusion

Inception Hosting is a young company, and the fact that they are located in Netherlands and offer such low prices for Xen VPS has definitely casted some doubts when I first decide to test with them. However, it has proven that all my worries were unnecessary.  Although not the cheapest VPS providers that I have ever seen, Inception Hosting does provide a very solid VPS service, particularly 8-core processors and over 2400 UnixBench scores make them definitely very competitive at that price. Furthermore, the excellent support and their attitude of never keeping customers in the dark has certainly make them a great potential candidate to be another big name in the industry. As such, if you are not  I would recommend Inception Hosting to everyone who needs a solid VPS, especially if you are in Europe and needs some serious processing power.

    • @Anthony: Just saw the email in my inbox this morning, but you are pretty quick and spread out the news. It is good that you are putting up SSL on both WHMCS and SolusVM portals, I am pretty sure you will gain quite a few more customers just for that. I will update my post to reflect such as well.
      Regarding the previous comments, yes, there were some issues I had with the MySQL DB (totally my fault while I was screwing things around) and my backup was pointing to a non-existing FTP account for a few days before that, so although I was able to restore some of the comments made before the last successful backup, and was able to restore all the posts (thanks to Windows Live Writer), unfortunately there were some comments removed. My sincere apologies to all 96mb.com readers about the mistake. 🙁
