96MB Low End VPS Review Part XXXV – MegaWorldHosting
There are several VPS auctions on WebhostingTalk almost at any single period of time. To VPS users like you and me, they basically provide us opportunities to get some really decent VPS at an amazing price, and to the VPS hosting providers, especially the relatively new VPS providers, it is definitely a great opportunity for them to increase the brand-awareness in the VPS market. Recently, I have won one of such auctions for a VPS provided by MegaWorldHosting and decided to take a look to see how much I can get out of the four dollars per month.
Basic Information and Set Up
Justin appears to be leading the marketing effort of MegaWorldHosting and the domain name registrant as well and he also seems to own Sprocket Networks, which, until recently, has been offering VPS auctions quite actively on WebHostingTalk. Sprocket Networks has since moved to the relatively high end Xen with OnApp control panel set up, making MegaWorldHosting seems to be the budget spin-off of the company.
After the auction has concluded, Justin PMed me a special sign up link at which the price was already adjusted, and here is what I won for 4 USD per month:
Note that the RAM of 512MB is actually 256MB of dedicated RAM and 256MB of burstable RAM (I believe it is VSwap, as indicated on their SolusVM Control Panel page), which really makes 4 USD per month not that great of a deal. However, I guess the selling point is really the part where the service is managed, which means MegaWorldHosting is supposed to take care of all the issues for you.
MegaWorldHosting still requires a domain name to register for a VPS, which is an annoying feature in WHMCS that seems to be able to removed with some custom coding:
There are two configuration options available while signing up: the OS to load and the control panel.
There are a few OS templates available from MegaWorldHosting:
As you can see, this covers pretty much all of the latest version of the major Linux distributions.
The interesting part is that although Plesk 10 is one of the templates available, they do not actually offer the option for you to purchase Plesk 10 liscense, instead, only CPanel is available, at a pretty high price:
I am kind of curious how many people will buy cPanel license from them for 18 USD per month when they can get the license for 15USD online.
Paypal payment was sent to Justin’s personal Paypal account, and although my Paypal payment confirmation comes 8 minutes before the confirmation of payment was sent from MegaWorldHosting, the welcome email came at the same time with the payment confirmation. Everything is pretty standard and the password was shown in plain text.
Once logged into the WHMCS system via the secured HTTP connection, I was hoping to see some of the VPS control buttons, but instead, this is all I see:
Therefore, you won’t be able to control your VPS through the WHMCS system.
The SolusVM control panel is on a non-standard HTTP port and once logged in, a pretty standard SolusVM interface is shown:
There is no instant rDNS nor IPv6 addresses. However, there are quite a few OS templates available:
What I am particularly impressed with are the various packages that comes with the Debian distributions, such as Debian 6 OpenPanel and Debian 6 SYSCp.
Test on the VPS
As mentioned above, the test VPS has 256MB of dedicated RAM, 256MB of vSwap and 40GB of hard drive space. The VPS is located in Clifton Park in New York, although the IP address is owned by Sprocket Networks and I have loaded Debian 6 template for testing.

Slightly more than 400MB of hard drive space was used for the OS reload, which is once again, pretty standard.

The beancounters setting is something that puzzled me, which I guess has something to do with the vSwap set up:

As you can see, the barrier and limits are set to some really ridiculous values.
As a result, there is little surprise when the vzfree output is pretty freaky as well.

Four i5 CPU cores are assigned to the VPS and they do not seem to be throttled.

Download speed seems to be pretty good at the first try, I was able to get 10MB/s during the Cachefly download test:

If you think 3.10MB of upload speed is bad, this is actually the best I have got with this VPS.
Next is BuyVM VPS from San Jose, CA:

When I did the first dd test, I had a pretty good result and the disk I/O was in three digits range:

However, that seems to be the only time I got lucky, trying the same test later on that day gives me a much worse result:

Trying one more time today showed slightly better result, but still far from satisfactory:

And here is one more chance while I was typing out this post:

This time it is barely usable, however is pretty low by any standard.
Finally, giving the terrible disk I/O, I was a little surprised to see the box actually did pretty well on Benchmarks:

Customer Service and Support
Since the VPS is supposedly to be fully managed, I was curious to find out what are exactly included in the management items. So I actually submitted a ticket at 6:09PM on a Friday and the ticket was responded by 6:46PM, but the answer is a little ambiguous:
Pardon me for my lack of comprehension, but what does “templates, updates, CP, etc” mean exactly for a 256MB VPS?
Another ticket asking about the exact RAM amount (since I was expecting 512MB of dedicated RAM and only get 256MB when I logged in) was answered within 4 minutes, which was pretty fast.
Conclusion
The VPS itself did not exactly show an impressive performance, other than good benchmark results due to perhaps four un-throttled CPU cores, clearly the VPS is heavily oversold as indicated by the heavily fluctuating disk I/O and network speed. Customer service seems to be fast, which is perhaps a good aspect of the “management”, although I am not too sure what “management” exactly entails to. Therefore, I do not think I can recommend MegaWorldHosting for any purpose, unless all you need is a fast CPU for processing or you just need one of the Debian control panels to play with.

Not a big fan of the cpu for a server.
In a desktop the I5 makes a VERY fast cpu for the price but for a server? not sure I like that.
ECC ram does not work with an I5 and I think ECC ram is pretty important when you are running a few dozen virtual machines.
The disk performance is scary as well, maybe someone was running DD tests but you tried 3 or 4 times so that is scary!
@Luma: And keep in mind those dd are running even on different times in the same day as well as on different days, I really think there is a very heavy overselling on those VPS…
