FREE VPS out of Toronto!
UPDATE: Amanah has ceased to offer their free VPS services.
Amanah has just sent me an email informing me that they are now offering a small VPS out of their Toronto location. It comes with the following specifications:
- 1GB of hard drive space
- 128MB of RAM
- 100GB bandwidth at 100Mbps
- OpenVZ
Yes, I know the hard drive space is a little small, but I believe they are the only provider in Canada who is offering free VPS! So definitely sign up quickly before all the stock are gone. Their plan, as far as I know, is to offer the free VPS on a permanent basis and you will not be charged for the service at all.

By the way, set up is not instant as they do screen every order manually, and the last time I signed up with them, they did have some issue sending the VPS information email, let’s hope it has been fixed by now.

UPDATE: No Gmail/Hotmail and other free email service allowed for sign up, you will need a company email address.
Kind of a hassle not to get stuck in maxmind there. On the first try I ended up in maxmind, because my IP didn’t match my country, on the second try I didn’t succeed because my email address was aldready in the system.
Third try via cellphone with a different IP and another mail seems to have worked. Will still have to see if I get accepted, though.
Order one. and I am wondering if they will limit the country visitors coming from. Such as only U.S. and Canada can register. Whatever, Thanks for your info.
I’ve managed to get an account…but the resources are very limited….cant even run yum update 🙁

@camarg: Did you actually received the VPS?
nope. They replied to my ticket on the 26/03/2012 saying that they would set it up on the following week but it’s still in pending status. I didn’t bother opening another ticket cause I think there are people who will need it more than I do.
@camarg: probably they give up on the project? My free VPS is still online and only had 2 reboots so far (too lazy to dig out my emails to double-check) but it seems to be a while since I heard anything from Amanah. Oh well, hopefully if and when they do release new stock, you’ll be able to get it.
I got my vps, I had to submit a ticket once I had registered to get my vps activated. The first time I went through I got stuck at maxmind with no call and it was marked fraud. The second time it went through and got stuck at pending. After I submitted a ticket explaining my complications with registering they activated one of the accounts and removed the other with no further issue. Haven’t gotten to play with it much yet, but since it has such low resources it probably will end up being used as a vpn server or for a small website. I do however wish they had a 32bit debian template available, in the control panel they only have 3 templates: CentOS (32bit), Debian 6 (64bit), and a Ubuntu (64bit). Don’t know if its fair to ask for a template and be opening support tickets for a free service…
@TheLinuxBug: I have called the owner about the issue and he asked me to send an email to the sales guys, and they are looking into it…
I signed up on the weekend and haven’t heard back from them… also how come this thread is gone from WHT?
@Hussein: Actually got a warning from WHT about this, apparently only paid hosting can be advertised on WHT, free ones have to go to freeWHT, LOL 🙂 silly rules I guess?
Oh yea, that place isn’t very active. Also, I do not see a date on the original post, I find that helpful when reading on the internet. It would allow me to know how long it took from the article to the time Mark and Linuxbug got their accounts, as I am still waiting for mine. I opened a ticket this morning to confirm that my order was not marked as fraud and am waiting for a response. Thanks again.
Now there is a thread alive to discuss about this on WHT, apparently if you offer a free service TOGETHER with some paid services in the same ads, it is not a violation of the advertising rules and you won’t have your ads removed:

I was actually quite lucky really.
I applied for an account and got the page regarding the telephone fraud call.
I didnt receive such a call – but figured that dialing internationally may have been a problem – but, to be honest, I do not recall having any noticeable delay in getting the server setup.
I got an email confirming that the order was received and would be processed and within one minute, I had the VPS Server Setup email.
So far, very impressed with a free service although am reticent to put any production requirements there just yet.

I signed up shortly after the post and furthermore I live in Canada! Lol. I guess we will see. I am interested to use it as a backup DNS server. Btw, I can’t see the link in the post on the mobile site. It is there but looks like normal text.

They have reduced the offer from a 128/128MB to a 64/128MB OpenVZ VM.
And also downgraded for existing free users 🙁
@d00d: I just checked and confirmed what you said, it is a bit unfortunate but I guess there must be too many people signing up for this service…
