96MB Low End VPS Review Part XXV – Evolucix
It must have been almost a month since I was contacted to by Alvish to do a review for Evolucix. So why was the delay? Well, as some of you may know, I really have quite a few reviews lining up at the moment, but more importantly, their low end VPS have been out of stock for a while. Therefore, when I finally saw they have restocked, I took the first opportunity possible and grabbed one myself.
General Information and Set Up
Many providers start their budget lines of VPS with 128MB VPS, but the lowest plan with Evolucix has 256MB of RAM and at 5.95USD per month, it has the following specifications:
Note that TUN/TAP is not enabled by default but you can raise a support ticket to request for it. The VPS uses OpenVZ virtualization technology.
Sign up was via secured HTTP site and set up was instant (new VPS information and the paypal receipt literally came within the same minute). Password is in plan-text in the welcome email.
Once you logged into the WHMCS system via the secure HTTP website, the detailed VPS information is displayed under my service. The information is rather complete with the disk space, memory and bandwidth bars and graphs available:
However, the control options in the WHMCS does not seem to work and no matter which button I have clicked, here is what shows in their pop-up window, which is their home page:
The SolusVM control panel is on the non-standard HTTP port and once logged in using the user name and password assigned, a pretty standard SolusVM interface is shown:
Instant rDNS is not available, and the two backup options in the SolusVM control panel do not work as well.
Evolucix does not have many OS templates available, however it includes perhaps most of the OS distributions that majority of Linux users would like to use, including CentOS, Debian 6 and Ubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS was not included, which is one of my most favourite Ubuntu distribution.
Test on the VPS
As mentioned above, the test VPS that I have received has 256MB of guaranteed RAM, 10 GB of disk space and 200GB of bandwidth, the VPS is from TailorMadeServers, which is colocating in Colo4Dallas in Dallas, Texas.
With just the Debian 32 bit OS template installed, 16MB of RAM was used:
free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 512 16 495 0 0 0
-/+ buffers/cache: 16 495
Swap: 0 0 0
And slightly more than 400MB of hard drive is used, which is pretty standard for the Debian OS template:
df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/simfs 10G 413M 9.6G 5% / tmpfs 256M 0 256M 0% /lib/init/rw tmpfs 256M 0 256M 0% /dev/shmS
Top shows the corresponding processes running:

With the LNMP stack installed, is about 62MB, which is still pretty good:

htop output for those who are curious:
And about 1.7GB of hard drive space was used:
df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/simfs 10G 1.7G 8.4G 17% / tmpfs 256M 0 256M 0% /lib/init/rw tmpfs 256M 0 256M 0% /dev/shm
And Inodes are set to pretty high values as well:
df -i Filesystem Inodes IUsed IFree IUse% Mounted on /dev/simfs 5242880 69627 5173253 2% / tmpfs 65536 4 65532 1% /lib/init/rw tmpfs 65536 1 65535 1% /dev/shm
uptime shows the VPS is very lightly used:
uptime 21:34:09 up 1 day, 14:48, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
which is confirmed by the output of vmstat:
vmstat procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- -system-- ----cpu---- r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id wa 1 0 0 502476 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 88 0 0 100 0
cpuinfo shows there are 2 cores for the VPS, and they are not throttled:

Disk I/O is pretty reasonable at approximately 50MB/s:
dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync 16384+0 records in 16384+0 records out 1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 20.6407 s, 52.0 MB/s
Testing it again gives pretty consistent results:
dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync 16384+0 records in 16384+0 records out 1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 23.3343 s, 46.0 MB/s
Vzfree shows no overselling in memory resources:
vzfree

Swap: 0.00M (0.0% of Committed)
meminfo does not give too much additional information, although I am (still!) curious about why there are so many 0s in the output:
cat /proc/meminfo MemTotal: 524288 kB MemFree: 502588 kB Buffers: 0 kB Cached: 0 kB SwapCached: 0 kB Active: 0 kB Inactive: 0 kB HighTotal: 0 kB HighFree: 0 kB LowTotal: 524288 kB LowFree: 502588 kB SwapTotal: 0 kB SwapFree: 0 kB Dirty: 0 kB Writeback: 0 kB AnonPages: 0 kB Mapped: 0 kB Slab: 0 kB PageTables: 0 kB NFS_Unstable: 0 kB Bounce: 0 kB CommitLimit: 0 kB Committed_AS: 0 kB VmallocTotal: 0 kB VmallocUsed: 0 kB VmallocChunk: 0 kB HugePages_Total: 0 HugePages_Free: 0 HugePages_Rsvd: 0 Hugepagesize: 2048 kB
On a 100mbit port, the network speed is perhaps just average:
wget http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test -O /dev/null --2011-08-27 02:08:28-- http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test Resolving cachefly.cachefly.net... 205.234.175.175 Connecting to cachefly.cachefly.net|205.234.175.175|:80... connected. Although the upload speed seems to give a much better picture. On my BuyVM VPS in Fremont, CA, I was able to get above 5MB/s:
wget 209.236.123.10/100mb.test -O /dev/null --2011-08-26 16:46:04-- http://209.236.123.10/100mb.test Connecting to 209.236.123.10:80... connected. Quickweb VPS in London, UK, gives the second best results:
wget 209.236.123.10/100mb.test -O /dev/null --2011-08-26 16:49:17-- http://209.236.123.10/100mb.test Connecting to 209.236.123.10:80... connected. And finally, Nix Communication’s VPS in Montreal, Canada, had the slowest download speed from the test VPS:
wget 209.236.123.10/100mb.test -O /dev/null --2011-08-27 00:47:03-- http://209.236.123.10/100mb.test Connecting to 209.236.123.10:80... connected. HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK Length: 104857600 (100M) [application/octet-stream] Saving to: `/dev/null' 100%[======================================>] 104,857,600 1.06M/s in 91s 2011-08-27 00:48:34 (1.10 MB/s) - `/dev/null' saved [104857600/104857600]
Basically, the western coast offered the best speed, followed by Europe and unfortunately the download speed is not all that great for the east coast, making it perhaps more useful if the majority of the users of the VPS are to be based in west coast or Europe.
Finally the benchmark score showed pretty reasonable results, considering the amount of resources offered:

Customer Service and Support
The support provided by Evolucix is pretty quick, my first support request sent on a Saturday was completed in 2 hours 10 minutes (ticket sent at 12:25PM, answered at 12:35PM), and second one (which is sent on Monday evening, sent at 7:57PM) was actually responded within a minute! That is pretty fast response and I think particularly the fact that Alvish was asking me if there is anything they could do rather than just respond with facts makes me really think the support is great.
Conclusion
The VPS provided by Evolucix is perhaps not one of the best I have seen, and the relatively high price points makes them not exactly very competitive in the budget markets, where many hosting providers charging 60% as much could provide a VPS with comparable performance. Some work still have to be done on their WHMCS end, and many aspects of the VPS could have been better. Having said that, support is fast and helpful, which makes them perhaps a good candidate for the beginners who would like to learn more about VPS.
