96MB Low End VPS Review Part 61-FileMedia

My recent VPS reviews have been focused on mostly the VPS that are located in North America and despite all the similarities between the VPS services provided in Europe and Americas, the specifications provided, at the same price level, could varies quite a bit simply due to the cheaper bandwidth cost and the existence of some really low-cost DCs such as OVH and Hetzner. As such, I will start a review today on FileMedia, which is a German-based VPS provider offering KVM VPS.

Basic Information and Set Up

I noticed FileMedia when they have made a post on LowEndTalk to provide a free test VPS for three months for a review. As per the the advertisement, here is server that is on the offer:

Although I have been in Germany a few times as a tourist, I have to confess that I knew next to nothing about the language, however, thanks to the similarities between the European languages, it was actually not that difficult for me to figure out the VPS has 1 single CPU core capped at 500MHz, 256MB of RAM, 15GB of hard drive, 1TB of bandwidth at 1Gbit port and unlimited at 10Mbit port. There is one IPv4 addresses provided for free (extra cost 1.49Euro per month) and two IPv6 addresses that comes by default. It is actually pretty interesting in the way they give out the IPv6 addresses though since majority of the VPS providers would offer at least a /112 block, if not more, of IPv6 address.

Provision of the VPS was instant and I have received the New Server Information the moment that the invoice was generated, however, it was a little difficult for me to read because everything was in German:

SNAGHTML1ca6102c

Thankfully, the welcome email is a pretty standard email which most of the people are able to read it.

However, the language start to get challenging again once I logged into my WHMCS account, which is using secured HTTP protocol:

SNAGHTML1caa39ea

As you can see, although I have selected English as the interface language in WHMCS, many items in the interface remains in German language. It is understandable as FileMedia is primarily a Germany-based business.

Language aside, I am actually quite glad to see how detailed the service listing is, and the VPS control buttons seem to be working as well. Unlike most of the providers which have the graphs listed directly under the My Services, FileMedia actually used a pop-up to display the resource usage:

SNAGHTML1dce2eba

I think this is a great approach since the system no longer need to render a graph every time this page is opened, thus save some system resources as well.

The SolusVM control panel FileMedia uses is on non-standard HTTPS port with an user name that you are assigned to (which contains a 8 digit number that makes it really difficult to remember), and once logged in, a pretty standard interface shows up:

SNAGHTML1df49163

The reconfigure networking tab is useful if you have had any changes made to the IP address and once clicking on that button, a pop up showed up:

In the Reinstall tab, there are quite a few OS templates available, but as we have expected, the explanations are all in German:

Other than many flavors of Linux distributions, one of the highlights would be the availability of Windows 2008 and 2012, although with just 256MB of RAM, I am pretty certain that I won’t be able to use any of the two distributions available.

Interesting enough, there seems to be a lot more CD images available once you click on the CD ROM tab:

In fact, there are so many CD images that rather than taking many screenshots, I simply decided to open up the HTML code and listed it here.

There is also instant rDNS entry:

SNAGHTML1e13e0f9

And for IPv6 as well:

SNAGHTML1e14c021

On the Driver’s tab though, you only get a single option, and I am not sure why there is only Windows Virtio drivers available there:

Other than offering VPS service, there is also a 50-domain DNS service offered by FileMedia to the VPS users:

Test on the VPS

The test VPS that I have obtained 500MHz of CPU, 256MB of RAM and 15GB of hard drive space, and it has 1TB of bandwidth at 1Gbit and unmetered at 10mbit after that. The VPS is located at the data centre of ISPpro Internet at Jena, Germany and I have installed, as usual, Debian 6 32 bit for testing purposes.

When the OS was first loaded, 15MB of RAM was used, which is slightly less than the usual OpenVZ template:

About 680MB of hard drive was used:

 df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 15G 680M 13G 5% /

tmpfs 125M 0 125M 0% /dev/shm

And the inodes are set to pretty standard values:

 df -i

/dev/sda1 952848 25362 927486 3% /

When the full LNMP stack was loaded, to my surprise, only 38MB of RAM was used, which is a lot smaller than most of the cases I have seen in OpenVZ VPS:

free -m

And time sync:

time sync

real 0m0.048s
user 0m0.004s
sys 0m0.000s

I was not too impressed with the disk I/O speed though, in fact, such speed is considered pretty low by the standard today:

dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync
16384+0 records in
16384+0 records out
1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 38.0617 s, 28.2 MB/s

Testing again showed significant improvements, however the results is still not so satisfactory:

 dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync
16384+0 records in
16384+0 records out
1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 27.6352 s, 38.9 MB/s

IOPing showed some pretty unstable results as well:

--- . (ext3 /dev/disk/by-uuid/7487fae1-4134-447b-8b2f-abe843c5d5ca) ioping statistics ---
10 requests completed in 9080.0 ms, 127 iops, 0.5 mb/s
min/avg/max/mdev = 0.4/7.8/16.3/6.1 ms

And test again:

--- . (ext3 /dev/disk/by-uuid/7487fae1-4134-447b-8b2f-abe843c5d5ca) ioping stati stics ---
10 requests completed in 9058.5 ms, 190 iops, 0.7 mb/s
min/avg/max/mdev = 0.0/5.3/16.4/5.6 ms

The download speed was pretty impressive – if the port is on 100mbit connection instead of the advertised 1Gbit connection:

wget cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test -O /dev/null

Furthermore, since FileMedia has mentioned that they uses 1Gbit port, I have decided to use aget to test out the multi-threaded download, and the results is more consistent with the 100mbit port than 1Gbit could offer:

The first download test is from ThinkBroad, with their server located in London, UK in the Telehouse DC owned by NetConnex:

As you can see, from the download tests alone, it is very difficult for me to justify that it is actually using a 1Gbit port.

Upload speed is dependent on the physical location too, first is the upload test from my Quickweb test VPS in Chicago, IL:

wget http://84.23.xxx.xxx/100mb.test -O /dev/null
--2012-12-01 17:51:01-- http://84.23.xxx.xxx/100mb.test

100%[======================================>] 104,857,600  722K/s   in 3m 10s

2012-12-01 17:54:11 (540 KB/s) - `/dev/null' saved [104857600/104857600]

My test VPS in Los Angeles, CA, which is along the West Coast, showed slightly worse results:

wget http://84.23.xxx.xxx/100mb.test -O /dev/null
--2012-12-02 06:56:37-- http://84.23.xxx.xxx/100mb.test

2012-12-02 07:00:45 (414 KB/s) - `/dev/null' saved [104857600/104857600]

Finally, my XenVZ test VPS at Maidenhead, UK, showed the fastest speed of all due to physical proximity.

 wget http://84.23.xxx.xxx/100mb.test -O /dev/null
--2012-12-02 06:56:08-- http://84.23.xxx.xxx/100mb.test
Connecting to 84.23.xxx.xxx:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
Length: 104857600 (100M) [application/octet-stream]
Saving to: `/dev/null'

100%[======================================>] 104,857,600 1.81M/s   in 67s

2012-12-02 06:57:15 (1.49 MB/s) - `/dev/null' saved [104857600/104857600]

As you can see, even in continetal Europe, the network speed is probably less than satisfacotry for a 1Gbit port.

Finally, the benchmark tests, I was actually pretty surprised by the high score considering this VPS has only a single core CPU.

Customer Service and Support

I did expect too much out of a free testing VPS when it comes to support, however my technical ticket submitted on a Saturday at 23:44pm was answered the next day at 12:10pm. Although it was not the fastest I have ever seen, but for a low cost provider, such time should be acceptable. The best part? Reply was in English and is very formal.

Conclusion

Although primarily a German-based business, I am glad that FileMedia has taken a bold step moving to the international market, although obviously there will still be quite a bit of work ahead in terms of making the whole business a bit more catered towards the non-German speaking population. Disk I/O is not that great and the network speed may not be as good as they have advertised as 1Gbit port, however the benchmarks are pretty impressive and the support is relatively reasonable, and particularly the availability of Windows ISOs make it a good option for people who might need a Windows VPS in Europe.

  1. Isnt the language thing the fault of WHMCS, certainly looks like they use it, that or Solus, since half of it is in English.
A lot of those automated Emails are from whmcs, *it* should be smart enough to send an english copy, assuming it even offers the option to include multi-lang welcomes etc, if not, again, WHMCS problem, perhaps it why many hostings are moving away to hostbill

    • @Nobby6: I would think the template is fully customizable. In case of EDIS for example, they do send their welcome letter in 2 copies, one in German and one in English, I know it is duplicate emails for those who are bilingual in both languages but in reality, we are living in a world with way more German speakers than English speakers.
