96MB Low End VPS Review Part 68–CatalystHost 2GB

CatalystHost was recently reviewed on 96MB by one of the readers, jcaleb, and normally it is not customary for me to review VPS that has been reviewed not very long ago. However, I made an exception to this one partially because jcaleb was focusing on the customer service aspect of CatalystHost and I would focus a bit more on the “objective” aspects of it, and also because it is rare to see a relatively “new” provider receives almost nothing but positive reviews on major forums on the low end VPS community. Therefore, when they have made the 2GB RAM plan available (yes, it seems to me almost every single major providers is now running this plan), I have decided to get one myself and check it out.

Basic Information and Setup

As per their advertisement on LowEndTalk, here is what you get for 7USD per month:

Note that even though many providers offer the 2GB plan, the plan offered by CatalystHost is slightly more generous than the others as it has 60GB of storage (versus 50GB in most other cases) and 2TB of bandwidth. Furthermore, the plan is on 1Gbps port, which is great (at least in theory) as well.

The sign up page is standard WHMCS system on secured HTTP protocol (interestingly, their entire website seems to be on HTTPs protocol). However, it basically does not offer any customization option other than input the hostname:

You can also select the billing period, however there is no incentive for people to choose longer periods:

It is also interesting to note that click on the Client Area link on both top and at the footer are not working, when I click on any of them, I just get to the home page.

The provision was instant and I was able to receive the VPS the moment I have received the receipts from Paypal. As an addon service, they allow a single domain to be hosted via their DNS. This might be useful if you are in need of finding a DNS hosting quickly for a single domain. However in most of the cases, I prefer to separate the DNS provider with my VPS providers, and there are many DNS providers that have free plans available such as Hurricane Electric and Cloudflare.

Note that the domain of the VPS was automatically assigned based on the first letter of the first and last name of the user and as a subdomain of catalysthost.com. However, I do not think the subdomain is actually “active”, i.e., you can’t really visit the websites hosted on this VPS using this subdomain, it is merely just to get around with the fact that SolusVM now requires FQDN as the name of the VPS.

Also, note that CatalystHost uses pro-rated billing, and therefore my first bill was slightly higher than the recurring price and my monthly bills is always due on the first day of the month.

The integrated control panel was placed at the bottom of the page, where you can perform basic tasks on the VPS:

Catalysthost uses SolusVM as their VPS control panel, and it is logged in via unsecured HTTP interface. Once logged in, the standard Bootstrap interface can be seen:

On the Settings tab, you can turn on the TUN/TAP interface and the PPP interface, which is useful for those who would like to use the VPS for VPN purposes (although I personally would consider it a waste to run VPN only on a VPS with 2GB of RAM).

Test on the VPS

As mentioned above, the VPS that I have ordered for testing comes with 2GB of dedicated RAM and 512MB of Swap space, 30GB of hard drive space and 600GB of RAM. It is located in Incero datacenter in Dallas, Texas and I have used Debian 6 32 bit for testing purposes.

When the OS template was first loaded, 7MB of RAM space was used, which is pretty standard for the Debian 6 OpenVZ template:

I somewhat inclined to think vzfree is no longer useful in the new OpenVZ set up because every time I run it, it is giving me some outlandish result like the following:

For the download test, I was able to push close to the line speed of a 100mbit port when trying to download from Cachefly:

However, the second time, the speed really amazed me, when the speed was almost close to 1Gbit line:

I decided to do another test just for the sake of seeing how the speed is in general, as I was writing this. And this time, the VPS did not disappoint me:

Since it is pretty obvious that this is a gbit port, I’ve decided to use aget to test the multi-thread downloading and try to push the port to the full speed. The frist test is done using a 1GB test file from ThinkBroadBand, which is not typically a very fast connection:

As you can see, the test speed for this 1GB file download is close to 40Mb/s, which is pretty reasonable.

As you can see, in the second test, the speed is pretty much twice as the first one, which is great.

After testing the download speed, it is also necessary to test the speed of the upload. As usual, we have used three different VPS to test the upload, one at ChicagoVPS in Los Angeles, CA, representing the west coast locatopm, one at Quickweb VPS in Chicago, IL, representing the east coast location and finally a Prometeus VPS from Milan, Italy, representing the connection to the European continent.

First is the result using the ChicagoVPS LA unit:

At 1.72MB/s, the speed is by no means impressive. However the second test using my Quickweb VPS at Chicago, IL, really surprised me:

As you can see, connection to Prometeus representing the best uploading speed.

The disk I/O for this VPS is probably too “good” for a HDD set up, even for RAID10 set up, which lead me to believe that it is at least SSD-cached.

Just for curiousity I decided to do another round of dd test as I am writing this article, and this is what I can see:

As you can see, the speed is not exactly very consistent, however the speed is extremely fast for a HDD-based VPS.

I have also done some ioping tests to see how well the disks are responding. Initially I was using version 0.6 of ioping, which gives the results in milliseconds:

Overall the performance of this VPS is great, and both disk I/O and networking are pretty impressive.

Customer Service and Support

Some providers offers really solid VPS but probably the client care is a little lagging behind, others offer really good support but probably the service is less than satisfactory (I won’t name any here but I am sure everyone has a few names in mind). However when it comes to Catalyst Host, I am glad that they have both on the offer.

Unlike most of the cases that I have had, my first interaction with CatalystHost was actually initiated by Ryan himself, when he noticed that I didn’t pick up any OS immediately. The second ticket was sent in by me on some SolusVM issues. I sent the tickets 18:29, received the first response at 18:33 and none of the replies from their end took more than 10 minutes as Ryan was trying to do all the magic on his end.

If I have to pick the bone from the egg though, I would say the time they left their clients to respond to the tickets before closing them automatically was a bit too short at 12 hours. Of course I can see that people are normally eager to get issues resolved and won’t take more than 12 hours to send in a reply, and one can always re-open the tickets relatively easily. However sometimes it might take people more than 12 hours due to time differences and/or other commitments, I would say perhaps a 24 hour window would be nice.

Conclusion

I would not completely deny that I do have my reservations and doubts when jcaleb sent me his review, which is almost nothing less than very positive comments. However now that I became a customer of CatalystHost myself, I am truly impressed as well. It is rare for a VPS provider to offer good VPS with great disk I/O and yet very pro-active customer support, and yet managed to keep the price well-within the low end market. I certainly hope Ryan and his team would continue with the hard work and given time, I won’t be surprised if they become one of the top providers within this market.

  1. I was skeptical too at first. I don’t believe in what they brag about quality and support. But having tried them anonymously, and being able to communicate with them changed my mind. They are still a small company, but I hope they do well.

I believe that the server your on is actually all HD Based with 8 500GB Enterprise drives in Raid 10. Keep watching, it is about time we post a promo. 🙂

  3. This one slipped past me as well. Ryan and myself found ourselves quite occupied this summer and both had to work a little harder to maintain the quality we aim for. While I’ve left Catalyst due to my day job requiring a non compete, the company will always be important to me. I appreciate the balanced review and certainly notice there were some areas where we fell short. Ryan and Don are even more focused on excellence now than ever before, and I’m still very excited to be a bystander as two friends that I hold in the highest regard continue to perform at their best.
